In this advance level masterclass, farmers will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of key parasites of sheep and develop an understanding of the effects of these parasites on the animal and flock, together with any statutory obligations. Advice will be given on careful diagnosis, treatment, and management of different parasites, focusing on optimising grazing management and responsible medicine use.

Participants will leave the Masterclass having covered the following -

  • Develop an understanding of key parasites of sheep, including gastrointestinal roundworms, liver fluke, sheep scab, ticks, and lice.
  • Develop an understanding of SCOPS principles to parasite control.
  • Understand the importance of anthelmintic resistance and how to measure, monitor, and manage this.
  • Develop an appreciation of responsible antimicrobial use with detail on different types of medicine, targeted at different parasites.
  • Develop an understanding of key diagnostic tests for different parasites, together with an appreciation of how they might be used, and the limitations they may have.
  • Understand the importance of biosecurity and build confidence in developing a biosecurity plan in conjunction with their own vet.

Throughout the sessions, an appreciation of the economics of production/loss of production, labour, and medicine costs would be factored in to enable attendees to build this into their own decision making in the future.
