Focus Site Project: Converting a set stocking organic beef and sheep unit to a rotational grazing system

Project Aims:

  • Demonstrating the process of converting from a set stocking beef and sheep farm to a rotational grazing system and the associated benefits.
  • This project aims to highlight all the practical considerations of dividing the farm up and installing all relevant infrastructure and provide a blue print to such conversions.
  • This project has been undertaken on other sites within the Demonstration Network, including Pen y Gelli Focus Site, Orsedd Fawr and Aberbranddu.
  • The benefits of rotational grazing compared to set stocking systems are well documented and the practice is widely used within the dairy sector to great effect.
  • Despite its huge potential to improve grass utilisation, growth and quality, rotational grazing systems remain to be an exception rather than the norm within the beef and sheep sector.
  • One of the possible reasons for this is the degree of diversity within the livestock on the farm in terms of feed requirement during the grazing season. This poses a considerable challenge when it comes to feed budgeting over the duration of the year
  • This project will address these challenges and offer practical solutions on such mixed systems.
  • Within the project, approximately 30ha will be split into smaller paddocks using permanent and temporary electric fence.
