Trial: Drought tolerant grazing leys

Over the past 5 years, increasingly drier summer months have led Marc, Wynn and Bethan, who farm at Cilthrew, to investigate improving the productivity of some of their sloping land which tend to experience reduced grass growth for prolonged periods over the summer.

By trialling various seed mixtures and treatments, it is hoped that we can establish which grass, legume and herbs species suit these fields and whether adding products containing mycorrhizal fungi and rhizobacteria, can contribute to improving the quantity and quality of forage grown which will ultimately drive improvements in efficiency in these key business areas.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • reduce the farms’ greenhouse gas emissions
  • support improvement in maximising carbon storage and sequestration whilst reducing the whole-farm carbon footprint
  • maintain and enhance the ecosystem
